Module 3 Blog Rhymes of The Past

One example of a technology that represents a rhyme of history would be the information revolution. The word revolution indicates instant and frequent change. This change could have been implemented over a course of decades. For example, newspapers or similar technology, like microfiches. However, revolution usually described changes in society. This could mean a cliché or changes in communication formed by society.

The new media of information became part of our changing society. This means that new media includes communication, which refers to technology, like cameras and videos. The media supports and helps the existing order of communication among educators who look for change based on their opinions. Dr. David Thornburg (2009) discussed how the force called rhymes of history demonstrated how patterns in society rekindled from the past are usually reinvented through technology to meet current needs.

Kelly’s concepts of embodiment, restructuring, and codependency represent how obsolete and emerging technology can represent the embodiment or features from past technology. Kelly also, described how obsolete technology can be restructured into new technology that provide benefits from the past with a codependency upon technology to provide specific services.

  1. Hi Petti
I enjoyed reading your post. As I was reading I did think about how information was received from the 80s to today. It is amazing how so much technology can make a difference in how fast we receive information to the quality of it. I remember using the card catalog in college to write papers now all we need to do is Google the information. Great post!

    1. Hi Latisha,

I remember when mobile phones were competing to offer smaller phones. It now seems that the trend is reversing with larger screens on smartphones. Speaking of large phones, have you seen the Samsung Note 3? It sports a 5.7” screen. Huge phablet!

  2. Petti,
Great choice for rhyme and I am constantly amazed at the vast difference in communication methods today vs when I was a child. The change is something I really have started taking for granted - and my own kids act shocked when I tell them how we used our phone or did our reports using the microfilm at the library. You would think I was telling them we used the Pony Express to mail letters.

  3. Hi Petti,
I am surprised how long printed newspapers are lasting in today’s market. The newspaper companies in my area offer content online, and I do not remember when I last looked at a physical newspaper. I personally think it is a waste of trees because the vast majority of people I know use the Internet in my area. We all have access to the newspaper online.
